How Does Invisalign Work?

You wear each set of aligners 22 hours per day for one week each (two in some circumstances), removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position our doctors prescribe.

You'll visit your orthodontist about once every ten to twelve weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 12-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 36 and 48, but both will vary from patient to patient.

How Old Do I Have to Be to Wear Aligners?

There's no age requirement to be treated with Invisalign. We find that our younger patients tend to be more compliant with wearing the aligners than our older patients. We have patients as young as seven years old who have chosen to be treated with Invisalign and are undergoing the First Phase of orthodontic treatment, who still have many baby teeth.

 

Can I Go to Any Dentist for Invisalign?

Any dentist can give you Invisalign, but different dentists have a wide range of experience, expertise and skill. To make sure you get the best results, ask your dentist these questions:

  1. Are you a certified orthodontist with 2-3 years of additional training after the completion of dental school?
  2. How many Invisalign cases have you completed?
  3. Did you do the orthodontic treatment for your children or did someone else?

This will give you a good idea of how qualified your dentist is with Invisalign. A certified specialist with a lot of experience will be able to provide you with the best result possible.

 

Will I Need to Wear Retainers When I Finish Invisalign Treatment?

Just like any other orthodontic treatment, you need to use your retainers to maintain tooth movement with Invisalign. Generally, you will be asked to wear the removable retainers full time for a short duration of time followed by indefinite periodic nightly wear.

Patients commonly ask how long they should wear retainers, and the best answer is as long as you want your teeth to stay straight!
