In orthodontics, we use two primary routes for alignment: traditional braces and clear aligners. Part of our job is helping you to determine the best choice for you and your smile. Today, Brodsky Orthodontics will help provide some insight and answer once and for all: Should I get clear aligners or braces?
Which is Which?
First and foremost, we’ll discuss what these two treatments entail on a base level.
- Traditional braces consist of brackets and wires and are a time-tested means of achieving a smile you’ll love.
- Clear aligners like Invisalign employ plastic trays to gently shift your teeth over time.
The Primary Differences
Now, let’s examine how these types of treatment compare and contrast to one another. You’ll need to consider many things when choosing a route for orthodontic treatment, though Dr. Joel, Dr. Charles, or Dr. Vistica will be there to help guide you along the way.
1. Appearance
- Invisalign: The transparent plastic design makes these ideal for people who don’t want their treatment to be too obvious.
- Braces: While braces are visible, clear braces are also available for a less noticeable look. These still have visible brackets and wires. It’s important to note that this treatment is just as effective as clear aligners.
2. Comfort and Fit
- Invisalign: These trays are made from BPA-free plastic and generally offer a more comfortable fit. This is because the plastic is smoother than traditional braces components. But, like braces, they can cause some discomfort when transitioning to a new set.
- Braces: Metal brackets and wires can irritate the soft tissues of the mouth, especially after our team tightens them. Orthodontic wax is a great tool to help with friction.
3. Customization
- Invisalign: Each set of aligners is individually crafted specifically for the patient using extremely detailed 3D imaging software. No two sets are exactly alike.
- Braces: Braces are also highly customized. They are manually adjusted periodically through appointments, during which we tighten wires and change elastics.
4. Treatment Complexity
- Invisalign: This treatment is most effective for treating mild to moderate alignment problems. They may be unsuitable for more complex cases involving significant bite corrections or severe crowding.
- Braces: Traditional braces are versatile and can address even the most complex orthodontic issues, including significant bite problems and large gaps.
5. Emergency Situations
- Invisalign: If a set of aligners is lost or damaged, we typically recommend that the patient move onto the next tray early. Clear aligners are less likely to cause complex emergencies but still require careful compliance from the patient.
- Braces: Due to their components, damage to braces can occur, such as broken brackets or bent wires. All manners of orthodontic emergencies usually require immediate attention to avoid pain or discomfort, treatment delays, or any other serious implications to the patient.
6. Compliance and Discipline
- Invisalign: The patient is entirely responsible for making sure they wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day. Since they are removable, wearing them consistently and following our team’s instructions is critical.
- Braces: Compliance can technically be less of an issue since braces are fixed in place. Once applied, your braces stay on until the end of the treatment. That being said, patient compliance is still critical in the form of oral hygiene to ensure your treatment goes to plan.
7. Impact on Daily Activities
- Invisalign: Some patients are happy with the fact that these aligners can be removed for special occasions, eating, and drinking, which means minimal impact on daily activities. But again, they must be worn constantly to their job, so you cannot be too liberal with removal.
- Braces: Fixed braces can impact eating habits and speech at the beginning of treatment. You’ll need to avoid certain foods and adapt to changes in speech, but both of these things become easier with time.
8. Technology and Innovation
- Invisalign: These can be seen as more cutting edge in the sense that the treatment evolves with advancements in 3D imaging and digital treatment planning. It can offer more precise and effective results over time.
- Braces: Traditional braces have greatly evolved thanks to technological advancements, such as self-ligating brackets and improved materials, while still maintaining their core functionality. We also offer Lightforce Braces, which are fully customized 3D-printed braces designed for each patient’s unique needs. Additionally, our InBrace Hidden Braces provide a modern, discreet option featuring self-adjusting components for a more streamlined treatment experience.
